Through Manchester, Cheshire and the Pennine, water flows from dense major towns to open countryside, wild and dramatic. Our waterways offer both a lively city experience and wonderful countryside.
Along with our waterway partnership we are guardians of these very precious waters, and we believe every individual should be entitled to create special memories on and around our waterways.
We are incredibly proud of the canals and rivers we manage between Kidsgrove, Huddersfield, Sowerby Bridge and Greater Manchester. We also enjoy our magnificent Standedge Tunnel, one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways.

Jean Sprackland was commissioned by Manchester Literature Festival and the Canal & River Trust to write a cycle of poems inspired by a boating weekend along the Peak Forest Canal from Whaley Bridge to central Manchester. The resulting poems, Lock Songs, were performed at a special event at Hope Mill Theatre on 23 October 2016 as part of the Manchester Literature Festival. You can read the poems by clicking on the link above. Listen to audio recordings of Jean reading the poems here.
