The charity making life better by water

Fradley Junction

Fradley Junction

Fradley Junction is where the Coventry Canal joins the Trent & Mersey Canal. It's one of our busiest places, with cafes, a pub and the ever popular Fradley Pool Nature Reserve.

Where does the water come from?

The Trent 6 Mersey and Coventry Canals meet at Fradley Junction. Most of the water here, comes from reservoirs north of Stoke-On-Trent. Water also comes down the Staffordshire 6 Worcestershire and Coventry Canals, from as far away as Birmingham and Northamptonshire. Feeders (diverted streams) also bring smaller amounts of water into the system.

The main water sources are Rudyard, Stanley and Knypersley Reservoirs, 28 miles away. Rudyard, Knypersley and Stanley Reservoirs hold over 4,000 million litres.

Woodend Lock may fill and empty over 6,800 times a year - it's one of the busiest on our network. It uses about 90,000 litres of water every time it fills and empties. Fradley Pool Reservoir, now a nature reserve and fishing lake, was originally constructed to store surplus water from the Trent & Mersey Canal.
