Our canals are uniquely placed to help deliver our shared vision – to unlock the ‘power of blue’ - and play a pivotal part in keeping canals at the heart of Manchester’s communities and finding innovative ways to use them to bring new life and growth into these areas.
They provide modern solutions, from sustainable travel routes and flood resilience, to regeneration, boating and tourism, leisure and community pride.
With over 130km of Trust-managed waterways across Greater Manchester, canals continue to shape the identity of towns and cities across the region. Our waterways connect with major areas of regeneration, offering ready-made infrastructure that supports housing, active travel, placemaking, public health and climate adaptation.
By working with local authorities, developers, stakeholders and communities we aim to maximise impact across the region, ensuring canals complement and help to deliver Greater Manchester’s Good Growth Strategy, which embraces inclusive economic growth, housing delivery and environmental resilience.
Our ambition is clear. Working together with our partners and stakeholders, we will continue to develop and utilise the canals of Greater Manchester for the future, as places for inclusive and sustainable growth, places for people, nature, health, and wellbeing, as well as helping to build climate resilience.
