Apprenticeships

As a Canal & River Trust apprentice, you will take part in practical, on-the-job training whilst studying for a formal qualification.

Watch this video to hear about the work that Vanessa, a former Canal & River Trust carpenter apprentice, does.

What to expect

Our apprenticeship programmes help the Trust to pass on traditional skills that are necessary to carry out our important work on and around the canal network. Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16 (not in full-time education) and allow you to earn a wage while you work and study.

A Canal & River Trust apprentice will:

  • Work alongside our experienced staff
  • Learn job-specific skills
  • Get hands-on and involved
  • Earn a wage and get holiday pay
  • Be given formal study time (equivalent to one day a week)

There are a wide range of STEM apprenticeship roles to choose from at the Canal & River Trust including:

  • Construction
  • Ecology
  • Masonry
  • Joinery
  • Carpentry
  • Engineering
