Work experience

Explore careers. Protect waterways. Shape the future.

Are you curious about what it’s like to work at the Canal & River Trust? Our work experience programme is a great way to explore careers in construction, waterway management, engineering, heritage, customer service, and more—while playing a role in protecting and conserving 2,000 miles of canals, rivers, and docks across England & Wales. (That’s the equivalent of 80,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools!)

How our Work Experience Programme works

We run a cohort-based work experience model, delivered regionally at set times throughout the year. This structured approach allows participants to gain valuable insight into the Trust’s work while meeting like-minded individuals.

Availability and locations

Our work experience weeks take place in different regions at set times throughout the year, typically running in summer with applications opening in spring. We generally partner directly with schools but occasionally have open cohorts.

All available opportunities will be listed on this page.

If you represent a school or college and are interested in arranging a work experience week for a cohort of 6–10 students, please get in touch with us at [email protected].

Individual placements

Due to the way our work experience programme is structured, placements for individual school students are currently not possible. Instead, we encourage students to take part in our cohort-based work experience weeks or explore our Virtual Career Taster Days for an insight into the Trust.

Virtual Taster Days

If you're unable to attend an in-person work experience week, our Virtual Career Taster Days are a fantastic alternative. These interactive online sessions provide an overview of the varied careers at the Canal & River Trust.
