1793 - Camlas newydd i Abertawe
Cynhaliwyd cyfarfod cyhoeddus i godi tanysgrifiadau ar gyfer camlas newydd i gludo glo o'r pyllau yn y bryniau uwchlaw Afon Tawe lawr i borthladd bach Abertawe. Roedd modd cludo mwynau copr a fewnforiwyd hefyd yn ôl i'r gweithfeydd mwyndoddi ychydig i mewn i'r tir mawr o'r arfordir. Cafwyd cefnogaeth frwd i'r cynnig hwn ac yn y flwyddyn ganlynol, 1794, pasiwyd Deddf Seneddol yn llwyddiannus. Roedd y Ddeddf yn rhoi sêl bendith i adeiladu cyd-gamlesi Abertawe a Threwyddfa, a oedd yn rhedeg 16 milltir i fyny'r cwm i Aber-craf.

1796 - Adeiladu
Gan ddefnyddio llafur uniongyrchol i adeiladu'r gamlas, aeth y gwaith rhagddo'n dda. O fewn dwy flynedd, roedd y peirianwyr wrth y llyw, Charles Roberts a Thomas Sheasby, wedi llwyddo i agor yr adran gyntaf o Abertawe i Godre'r-graig. Erbyn mis Hydref 1798 roedd y gamlas gyfan wedi'i chwblhau gyda 36 o lociau a 5 dyfrbont. Pen y daith oedd basn a doc yn Hen Neuadd ym mhlwyf Aber-craf. 1830 – Oes aur y gamlas
Roedd Camlas Abertawe yn cynnig ffordd ganmil gwell o deithio o gymharu â'r ffordd, gyda badau yn gallu cario llwythi o 22 tunnell ar bob taith. Roedd tramffyrdd a dynnwyd gan geffylau yn cysylltu'r chwareli a'r pyllau glo ar lethrau'r bryniau â glanfeydd y camlesi. Cafodd Gwaith Haearn Ynyscedwyn a Glofa Waun Coed eu gwasanaethu gan eu camlesi cangen byr eu hunain. Cododd sawl diwydiant newydd ar hyd y llwybr hefyd megis Bragdy Pontardawe a Gwaith Haearn Ystalyfera yn y 1830au a Chrochendy Ynysmeudwy ym 1844.

1850 – Cystadleuaeth y cledrau
Yn y 1840au, cafodd incwm cwmni'r gamlas ei daro gan ddirwasgiad yn niwydiannau'r cymoedd a'r angen i ostwng tollau i atal bygythiadau'r rheilffyrdd. Dechreuodd y busnes ail-ffynnu eto pan gafodd cyfleusterau llongau Abertawe eu gwella'n fawr wrth i Ddoc y Gogledd gael ei gwblhau ym 1852 gyda chamlas gangen gysylltiedig. Dros y blynyddoedd canlynol, fodd bynnag, daeth y rheilffyrdd yn fwyfwy cystadleuol ac edwinodd y diwydiannau haearn, gan orfodi cwmni'r gamlas i ostwng eu tollau ymhellach. 1880 – Dechrau'r dirywiad
Un o'r rhesymau dros brynu'r gamlas gan GWR oedd er mwyn rhoi pwysau ar eu cystadleuwyr, y Swansea Vale Railway. Ym mlynyddoedd cynnar yr ugeinfed ganrif dirywiodd masnach fasnachol yn Abertawe yn gyflym ac ar ôl 1904 dim ond y chwe milltir isaf a oedd yn dal ar waith. Y cwch olaf i'w adeiladu ar y gamlas oedd y Grace Darling yn iard gychod Godre'r-graig ym 1918. Cyn pen deuddeng mlynedd, roedd traffig masnachol wedi dod i ben yn llwyr a chafodd adrannau o'r gamlas eu cau'n raddol a'u gadael yn segur.

Pan gafodd y rheilffyrdd a'r camlesi eu gwladoli ym 1948 trosglwyddwyd Camlas Abertawe o ddwylo'r GWR i'r British Transport Commission. Er bod traffig masnachol wedi darfod, roedd angen cynnal y gamlas o hyd i ddarparu cyflenwad dŵr i fusnesau fel Gwaith Nicel Mond. Roedd rhywfaint o gychod yn dal i ddefnyddio'r gamlas hefyd, ac ym 1958 cofnodwyd y daith cwch olaf a dynnwyd gan geffyl. Ar ôl hynny, roedd cau pellach yn ymddangos yn anochel.

1962 – Adfywiad
Erbyn i'r gamlas gael ei throsglwyddo i gorff newydd British Waterways, dim ond 5 milltir o ddŵr oedd ar ôl. Fodd bynnag, roedd gwaith adfer ar y camlesi dan arweiniad gwirfoddolwyr yn prysur ennill tir ledled Prydain, a chrëwyd Cymdeithas Camlas Abertawe ym 1981. Diolch i'w hymdrechion glew dros y 40 mlynedd nesaf, trawsnewidiwyd gobeithion y gamlas. Agorodd y bennod olaf yn 2012 wrth i berchnogaeth y gamlas gael ei throsglwyddo o eiddo'r llywodraeth i ofal elusen newydd Glandŵr Cymru.
