Wellbeing and Social Prescribing in the East Midlands

People in the East Midlands can enjoy taking part in canoeing, paddleboarding, a wellbeing walk, or gardening and bushcraft sessions as part of our Waterways Wellbeing programme in the region.

The programme is designed to make use of local waterways as a focal point to help people improve their mental and physical health. Participants can get involved in the programmes by self-referring onto the activities or through a social prescribing pathway.

Social prescribing involves helping people to improve their health, wellbeing and social welfare by connecting them to community services and activities like gardening, health walks and volunteering opportunities. GPs, link workers, or other health and wellbeing professionals can refer people to activities that are appropriate to them.

Benefits of the activities include spending relaxing time on or by the water, getting closer to nature, meeting people and learning new skills.

We’d like to thank our supporters, Sport England, Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, Harborough District Council (who have both provided funding through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund) and the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, for making the Waterways Wellbeing programme possible.
