The charity making life better by water

Volunteering projects

As part of our celebrations for the 225th anniversary of the Brecon Canal, our dedicated team of volunteers are volunteering their time to improve and care for this special waterway.

Throughout the anniversary year they are working on a number of projects along sections of the canal undertaking important maintenance tasks which continue to breathe life into the canal 225 years on from its inception.

Here are some of the projects our volunteers have got involved in to celebrate the Brecon 225 celebrations:

Brecon Basin

Volunteers have been working at Brecon Basin to help restore life back into the basin. With work that has been approved by our ecologist on the canal, they've been tackling the grass growth between paving stones, removing buddleia and painting mooring bollards.

Volunteer lock keeping

Before the summer when the canal sees an increase in boat traffic, volunteer lock keepers have been receiving training on how to operate the locks at Llangynidr to assist boaters navigating the flight.

Talybont-on-Usk

Volunteers have replaced rotten fencing on paths at Talybont-on-Usk, building new fencing to replace it.

Gilwern

With the support of funding from Monmouthshire County Council, volunteers have upgraded the picnic area at Gilwern to make it more accessible for wheelchair users.
