Pontcysyllte Aqueduct safety advice

Stay safe while exploring the breathtaking Pontcysyllte Aqueduct with these essential safety tips for cyclists, canoeists and paddle boarders.

PontySafety for canoeists and kayakers

The 11 mile Llangollen Canal World Heritage Site features some of the most spectacular waterway scenery in the country. It includes two stunning aqueducts at Pontcysyllte and Chirk, and two tunnels at Chirk and Whitehouse. We want everyone to stay safe when they visit.

Each year we welcome nearly half a million visitors who come to admire ‘the stream in the sky' either as walkers, boaters, anglers, cyclists, canoeists or stand-up paddle boarders.

We ask all visitors to share the space and be considerate of other people

For navigators, the Aqueduct is a one-way system.  We know that it can be frustrating if you have to wait but we ask users to be mindful of their fellow travellers and not spoil their experience or cause them harm.

When crossing over or through this special 200-year-old heritage structure please follow this guidance for your own safety and that of others:

  • Neither narrowboats or canoes/kayaks have right of way.
  • Please be aware of boats already waiting to cross at the other end of the aqueduct and be courteous by giving way to those who were there first.
  • All craft should give way to others who are already on the aqueduct – do not try to force people to go backwards, turn around or get out.
  • Do not enter the channel if there are already other users coming towards you – look out for canoes/kayaks who may be hard to see.
  • Please use the mooring areas at either end of the aqueduct to wait to transit.
  • Don’t stop for photographs in the middle for a selfie when it’s busy.
  • Don’t lean off or over the edge of your craft.
  • Cooperate with our volunteers and colleagues if they make a request of you – they will only do that if its needed.

Canoeists

Canoeists are allowed to paddle along both Pontcysyllte and Chirk aqueducts and, when wearing a head light, through both tunnels on the Llangollen Canal. Please be aware that boats travelling downstream will be carried along the water faster than travelling upstream.

Stand-up paddle boarders

Stand Up Paddleboarding is not permitted on Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Paddleboard safely across Pontcysyllte Aqueduct Paddleboards must be pushed across the aqueduct

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which is over 200 years old, has no protective railing on the canal side, making it a no-go crossing for stand-up paddle boarders.

Stand-up paddle boarders can paddle over Chirk Aqueduct (due to enhanced protection) but along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the two tunnels, you need to dismount and walk on the towpath, towing your paddle board in the water behind you.

Cyclists

Cyclists you need to dismount and walk your cycles on the towpath along both aqueducts and through both tunnels. Ideally your bicycle should always be on the water side.

When you're on the towpath you need to always use a bell and slow down whenever you pass pedestrians.

Please don't put yourself or others at risk and enjoy this wonderful structure safely.
