We love and care for your canals and rivers, because everyone deserves a place to escape.

Groups and school visits

How did the navvies build such a massive structure before we had modern powered cranes? Why did the Victorians want to build it in the first place? With real objects, real stories and a real working canal, our Trevor Basin Visitor Centre brings the people of Ponty to life.

Explorers - cub scouts

There's lots for your class or group to get stuck into on their visit to Ponty:

  • discover colourful displays, artefacts and models telling the story of the growth, decline and regeneration of the canals – perfect for studying transport, Victorians and the Industrial Revolution, as well as tourism and leisure topics
  • build the aqueduct – have a go at building our model of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and find out why arches are a good shape
  • investigate different wildlife habitats as one of our brilliant team will take you on a towpath safari
  • learn how to be safe near water and how to help someone in an emergency (this is also available as an assembly in your school in certain locations)

And for the ultimate canal experience you can even take to the water on one of the local boat trips. You’ll need to book these separately from your visit.

You can visit the museum before confirming your group or school visit where our team will be happy to help you devise a programme to suit your age group, time available, numbers of children and topic.
