Volunteering opportunities for Bronze, Silver and Gold DofE participants

If you're aged 14-24 and working towards a Duke of Edinburgh award, we've got the perfect volunteering opportunities for you.

Why volunteer with Canal & River Trust?

When you volunteer with us, you’ll develop valuable skills, build confidence and boost your wellbeing. You’ll be supporting your local community, protecting the environment, and helping nature thrive along our canals and rivers.

We have a variety of volunteering activities for individuals and groups, so you can choose what suits you best.

A special DofE pathway for 14-18 years

We know how difficult it can be to find a volunteering role if you are under 18.

Our pathway is run by DofE specialists who can introduce you to local volunteering opportunities for your age group, approve/sign off your hours, reimburse travel expenses, and support you throughout your time volunteering with us. Email us at [email protected] to register your interest.

Under 18's are also welcome to participate in other opportunities listed as 18+ when accompanied by an adult, such as a teacher, group leader or family member.

Five ways to volunteer with us

1. Join our #PlasticsChallenge

Age: 14+ years

Location: Various

Session time: Flexible

Task: Litter picking at your local canal or river

Individual or group? Flexible

  • More information on #PlasticsChallenge

    How do I take part?

    • Simply visit your local canal or river whenever it suits you. Carefully collect plastic rubbish and dispose of it safely and sustainably
    • You can go on your own, with friends or as a group with a teacher or group leader
    • Use #PlasticsChallenge on social media to encourage others to get involved!

Before you start, please read our Plastics Challenge Guide.

    Why does this matter?

Every year, millions of pieces of plastic end up in and around canals, and hundreds of thousands are carried out to our oceans. Plastic rubbish damages waterside habitats, destroys ecosystems, impacts water quality, and endangers species such as aquatic birds, water voles and otters.

2. Our DofE pathway for under 18's

    Why does this matter?

We want young people to be involved in the important work we do to maintain our 250-year-old canal and river network. Not all volunteering work is available to under 18's, so our DofE specialists will seek out and introduce you to activities for your age group, and support you throughout your time volunteering with us.
