Access at Standedge Tunnel

We’re always working to improve our places to visit, including Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre, so that everyone can enjoy them and have the best possible experience.

Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre is at the end of the towpath running from the train station. This may be slippery in wet or icy weather.

Lift access
The visitor centre is an old, converted warehouse with sometimes uneven and worn flooring. There are four floors (lower ground, upper ground, first and second) which are all accessible by lift.

Parking
Our official car park is at Marsden train station - a 15 minute towpath walk to us.

We have four dedicated disabled parking spaces – two at the visitor centre and two at Watersedge Cafe. The visitor centre has a double fronted entrance to allow wide access and Watersedge Cafe has ramped access.

Visitors with limited mobility and wheelchair users
Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre is fully accessible for wheelchair users. The boat trip into the tunnel is accessible for wheelchair users from the canal side. However, you might want to check with our boat pilot before boarding as it’s generally too narrow for most electric wheelchairs.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors
Assistance dogs are welcome in both buildings and on-board the boat trip. The film in the visitor centre has subtitles and you can ask for a guide script for the boat trip narration.

Blind and partially-sighted visitors
Guide and assistance dogs are welcome. We can also arrange for one of our team to join you on your visit. Our Watersedge menu is also available in large print – just ask a member of our team for a copy.

Disabled toilets
The visitor centre toilets are on the upper ground floor with the disabled toilet located at the bottom of the stairs opposite the back fire exit.

We’re always reviewing our Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre’s accessibility for all and are working to improve everyone’s experience. If you find something we’ve missed, please let us know.
