On a quiet morning in early June, just as the boating season was getting underway, our West Midlands rapid response teams swung into action to prevent one of our busiest canals from coming to a standstill.
A call came in that Wheaton Aston Lock on the Shropshire Union Canal had stopped working. The cause was unclear, but with boaters unable to open or close the paddles, we urgently needed to get the lock open and working again.
The Shropshire Union Canal is one of our most popular stretches of water, welcoming thousands of boaters and visitors every year. With holiday boaters already beginning to move through the route, at this time of year even a single lock stoppage, like the one at Wheaton Aston, can quickly cause severe disruption.
When something unexpected happens on our canals, every minute counts. Thanks to your support, our specialist rapid response teams are on hand and ready to act at short notice, diagnosing problems, carrying out repairs and keeping waterways safe and open.
Wheaton Aston lock, on the Shropshire Union Canal, is one of the canal’s busiest spots for boaters.
On this occasion, the West Midlands team quickly arrived at the site and emptied the lock of water so they could diagnose the problem. They found three separate issues had caused the lock to fail: a blockage was preventing the top-end paddle from opening, there was a damaged liner on the bottom-end gate and debris in the lock chamber was causing an obstruction for boaters.
To the relief of Richard Preston, our West Midlands regional operations manager, all of these issues were fixable. "Within hours, the team had arrived, diagnosed the fault and set to work," he says. "By early afternoon, the lock was fully operational again, avoiding significant disruption on one of our busiest canals."
Richard adds: "Every rapid response depends on skilled people, specialist equipment and years of expertise. Without swift action, delays would have quickly spread along the canal. We know how important this route is for holiday boaters and other cruising boats, so getting Wheaton Aston Lock back open by early afternoon was a real win for everyone who relies on and enjoys being out along the canal. It’s a great example of how your support enables our teams to work quickly and effectively to keep our canal network open."
