The charity making life better by water

Leicester street art trail

As part of a Local Growth Fund, art murals have been welcomed along Leicester's waterways in a bid to brighten up those routes for boaters and towpath users alike.

The commissioning of street art along parts of the River Soar and the Grand Union Canal is part of the Local Growth Fund (LGF), which is helping improve not only access to our waterways but also enhance the way these areas look to those who use them.

Illegal graffiti

Where graffiti once lived along these corridors, beautiful murals have replaced them, capturing the wildlife and natural surroundings of the area.

A sign of the times

The innovative signage has provided a more aesthetic journey for our boaters, where they are now encouraged to stop and spend time along these stretches of canal.

Graffwerk delivered two community outreach workshops as part of the project, giving local youth and wider community groups a chance to have a go at graffiti art themselves on mobile canvases or similar.

As part of our Community Roots project, project officer Roseanna Burton also carried out two community consultation workshops, additionally generating further ideas and themes of local significance to be incorporated into each commission by liaising with artists in advance. A chance to find out what local people value along the local waterways in Leicester.
