The charity making life better by water

The Joiners Shop

The Joiners Shop at Ellesmere Yard was the heart of fine woodworking tasks.

Entering the shop, you'll immediately notice the overflow of patterns from the nearby Pattern Room, many of which are new, primarily from the Pontcysyllte and Chirk Aqueducts. The red-painted patterns, cast today at the East Coast Casting Co. Ltd., demonstrate the site's ongoing job of crafting key components for canal infrastructure.

The shop features a projecting timber loading door, once used to hoist timber into the workspace, and a bay window where the foreman's desk stood, allowing him to oversee the Yard's operations. Inside, the shop housed machinery powered by shaft and belt systems, with dormer roof lights added later to improve working conditions.
