The charity making life better by water

Who are we?

Glandŵr Cymru is the Canal & River Trust in Wales. We own and care for the Llangollen, Montgomery, Monmouthshire & Brecon and Swansea Canals.

This includes total ownership of one of Wales's three World Heritage Sites; the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the Canal World Heritage Site and part of the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape World Heritage Site. The Montgomery Canal is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) with the largest population in the world of floating water plantain and 90% of the UK's population Grasswrack Pondweed.

This is the first time for sixty years that these canals have been outside UK Government control and this opens the door to major opportunities for Wales, not only to ensure that the potential of our waterways is fully realised, but also that of all Wales's waterways and waterscape.

We firmly believe that the waterways of Wales have a role to play in improving people's lives, prosperity and health. Only by working side by side with individuals, organisations and Government at all its levels, can this potential be fulfilled.

Year on year the number of people volunteering on the waterways and in the offices has been increasing at a startling rate. Communities are adopting their sections of the canal and supporters and Friends are routinely dipping into their pockets. We want to work with you to make sure the waterways of Wales contribute fully to the well-being of this country.
