Mike has had a number of roles throughout his volunteering years with us, and the list is rather impressive.
In Mike's words:
I've done lock keeping on the Leicester Line over the 12 years I've been volunteering, and a few times on the Trent & Mersey. I've also been a towpath ranger on the Leicester Line.
In the East Midlands I've been a visitor attraction risk assessor for things like weirs, locks, aqueducts and bridges.
I've also been involved in towpath surveys and a signage project. On behalf of the Trust I did a number of talks to public groups (U3A, gardening clubs, etc) I did quite a few and enjoyed it.
My list of ad-hoc jobs include:
- national Safety Culture task force
- helping at numerous lock open days all over the East Midlands
- helping with new volunteer induction and recruitment
- interviews for BBC Radio Leicester (several), BBC Radio Northampton (one) and BBC Radio 5 Live (one)
- interview and photo for the Leicester Mercury (certainly once, possibly twice)
- a few sessions with The Explorers (at Abbey Park, Northampton and on the Ashby)
- helping with the National Citizens Service volunteers in Leicester
- helping with / providing safety cover for The Leicester Urban Sketchers
- hedge laying (my knees can't take it any more)
- hedge planting; bulb planting
- vegetation clearance, lock painting, lock-side improvement works (Whetstone & Wigston); yard clearance / tidying (Loughborough & Kilby)
