Meet our canal pioneers, who made their mark during the 18th and 19th Centuries. Discover those responsible for some of the most notable and innovative structures along our canals.

(1716-1772) Brindley was one of the early canal engineers who worked on some of the first canals of the modern era

(1757-1834) Telford, is perhaps most well-known for his work on Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, but has a long line of engineering works

(1761 - 1821) Rennie, a Scottish civil engineer, created a wealth of iconic canals, bridges, pumps and lock flights, still used and admired today.

(1745 – 1814) Jessop, a civil engineer, was involved in many engineering projects including the West India Docks, the Cromford Canal, the Grand Junction Canal and the Ripon Canal

John Smeaton (1724-1792). After his engineering of the Eddystone Lighthouse in Devon, Smeaton was soon involved in waterway construction, starting with the Calder Navigation and Fossdyke Canal
