The charity making life better by water

Keeping canal conversations going thanks to Brian

Burnley in Lancashire was once the cotton-weaving capital of the world, built on the mills and canal that carried its cloth to Liverpool. Today, we’re still using the canal to bring local people together.

A group of people stand next to a canal and smile at the camera.

And it’s all thanks to a gift in Will by Brian Hall, a former Mayor of Burnley. Our community roots officer, Emma Fielding, picks up the story.

“I knew Brian, as many in the town did. He was a lovely man and a great believer in giving back to our community. That’s why we used his gift to set up a group called ‘Let’s try’. It’s designed for anyone who might feel lonely, anxious, or disconnected from their community.

It’s a welcoming, supportive space where people come together, enjoy time by the water, and build connections and self-confidence. The sessions encourage conversation, gentle activities, and shared experiences that help participants feel included, supported, and less alone. The group now meets every Thursday at Finsley Gate, our community hub on the canal.

Knowing Brian, I’m sure he will be up there, looking on and thinking, that’s my money well spent - making a positive impact on real people’s lives.”

Thanks to the kind £5000 gift of the much-loved former Mayor of Burnley, Brian Hall, our ‘Let’s Try’ group welcomes people to the canal side to find wellbeing.
