Floating Market to headline a busy Spring at Foxton Locks

Foxton Locks will come alive this Easter as the popular Floating Market returns from 3–6 April, forming the centrepiece of a busy programme of family-friendly activities at the Leicestershire attraction.

We're working with the site’s pubs, cafes and canal museum to organise a programme of fun family activities as Spring begins to bloom.

What to expect

During the Floating Market visitors can browse a vibrant mix of independent traders aboard their colourful boats, offering crafts, gifts and seasonal treats, all set against the historic backdrop of the iconic lock flight.

The fun continues throughout April with us hosting a range of interactive events designed to help families get closer to nature this Spring. There will be wildlife walks, pond dipping sessions, family crafts and nature-themed workshops.

We're also holding a series of family-friendly fishing activities at Foxton over the spring and summer months. Thanks to the support of local angling clubs and funding raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery, participants receive one-to-one tuition from qualified coaches, making it easy for complete beginners to give fishing a go.

Foxton Locks Inn & The Old Boathouse are getting in on the fun with a kids Easter colouring competition, giving entrants the chance to win a £50 voucher. Throughout April, Cocker Spaniels are the venue’s ‘Breed of the Month’, and their owners will enjoy 20% off bills over £10, plus a complimentary sausage or dog chew for their furry friends. On Saturday 11 April, families are invited to celebrate the end of the Easter holidays with live acoustic music on the Boathouse decking, free kids' face painting, and free children's crafts. Across the Easter period, visitors can also indulge in freshly made doughnuts, Mr Whippy-style ice cream, and handmade pizzas alongside the regular menu.

A highlight at Foxton Locks

Foxton Locks is the UK’s longest, steepest flight of staircase locks, built by hand more than 200 years ago to help raise cargo-carrying boats 75ft uphill. Set in 34 acres of natural green space, the site is also home to the remains of the Foxton Inclined Plane – a Victorian boat lift designed to haul boats up the hill and now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Visitors can find out more about the Inclined Plan at Foxton Canal Museum.

Helen Renny, our Foxton Locks Site Manager, said: “The Floating Market is always a highlight at Foxton Locks, enabling people to browse a fantastic range of crafts and gifts in the glorious surroundings of one of Leicestershire’s most amazing historic sites.

“This year it forms part of a really busy Spring programme, with plenty for families to see, do and enjoy. From pond dipping to craft sessions, we want to encourage people to come along, explore the site and spend time together discovering nature and their local history.”
