During the colder months, when the water temperature falls, fish generally require less food, and only feed for a short time during the day. But don't despair - there is still plenty of opportunity for a good days fishing.
Canals vs rivers
Canals are reliable winter venues. Typically they don't flood, whereas rivers can be out of bounds for weeks or months in the winter period.
Rivers will tend to have high flow rates in the winter months with the water colour much muddier. Canals may see the opposite, especially as boat traffic levels slow down, and the water may even become crystal clear.
If you decide you want to fish on the river, fish will most likely avoid the areas of higher flow and in high water conditions may migrate into adjoining tributaries.
Choose a hotspot
There are known winter hotspots! Town centres are a good place to start, where boats are permanently moored and try your local fishing tackle shop, they'll have up to date information.
The Aylesbury Arm is one of the top national sections for winter, offering reliable roach and perch. Shropshire Union Canal is also good for silverfish and clear waters. The Kennet & Avon Canal has high fish stocks and diverse winter pegs, whilst the Llangollen Canal is a bit of a favourite all-round.
