We love and care for your canals and rivers, because everyone deserves a place to escape.

Visitor moorings

Visiting boaters are welcome at the National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port.

When you arrive at the National Waterways Museum on the Shropshire Union Canal there are Canal & River Trust visitor moorings in the upper basin, near the museum entrance. To stay overnight, please contact museum reception, which is open 10am to 5pm daily (10am - 4pm Nov-Mar).

Moorings visiting boats are usually directed to the lower basin, through two sets of Whitby Locks, which are in the museum complex.

  • Charges £6.50 per person (or applicable normal museum admission charge) and subsequent days £4 per night
  • A boat arriving with 2 people and staying a week would therefore pay £37 - 2 x £6.50 (=£13) for day one and 6 x £4 (£24) for 6 days moorings.

Dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a lead at all times and are not allowed in the museum's galleries and cafe.

Facilities

The Museum offers secure moorings with fresh water and refuse facilities. Boaters can use the shop, cafe and toilets. We regret that we do not offer diesel sales.

Please note, due to technical issues, we do not currently have the facilities to offer pump-outs. We are working to resolve this. However, we do sell Canal & River Trust Unit cards for self service pump-outs; the nearest place to offer this facility is Taylor's Boatyard in Chester (approx. 8 miles away on S.U. Canal).
