Join us at the Commonwealth Communities Celebrations 2022

We are proud to be a founding partner of United by Birmingham 2022, the community brand of Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Together we can create a positive impact on local communities, help the delivery of the games and create a legacy for the future.

Starting out on your Commonwealth journey

If you have never been fishing before, we would recommend booking on to one of our popular Let’s Fish introductory sessions. You will be taught the basics of fishing at you own pace and can work towards earning your Let’s Fish gudgeon award

After perhaps four to six sessions you will be ready to take the next step, which is joining us at one of our 22 regional Commonwealth Communities Celebration events, being held as part of the United by Birmingham 2022 celebrations.

Regional community celebrations

The 22 regional events are listed below. All are free to attend, and you can take part in as many as you wish to, and collect an attendance certificate at each one. Every participant will also receive a prize. There are three age categories:

  • Cadet (7 to 10 years on the day) although 6 year olds who will be 7 by the 17 September 2022 may also attend.
  • Junior (11 to 15 years on the day)
  • Youth (16 to 20 years on the day)

You can reserve your place by visiting our Let's Fish! events page or by clicking the links below.

You will need to have some of your own fishing equipment to be able to participate. Guidance around acquiring basic starter equipment is here. Some Let’s Fish! clubs do have equipment that you can borrow. Do ask your Let’s Fish! coach at your next Let’s Fish event.

There is a useful instructional video of how to make the most of the occasion fishing wise here.

If you are aged between 13 and 16 inclusive, you also need to obtain your free rod licence before you go fishing. The full event rules can be found here.

National celebration of young people and fishing

Following on from the Regional Commonwealth Communities Celebrations, if you would like to take part in the largest fishing participation event for young people in the UK with around 300 other participants, then this event is just the thing you're looking for. Ideal for anyone holding the Trust gudgeon certificate award.

The format is very similar to the Regional Commonwealth Communities celebration events, but with the opportunity for all to win even fishing tackle prizes, vouchers, trophies, medals and, if you are really skilful a roach cap and an iconic Fjuka gudgeon mug. The event will be held over two days on 17 and 18 September 2022 with the full details available here.

You may enjoy reading some of the stories of young people who took part in the national celebration for the first time in 2021.

National Commonwealth Communities Celebration

Aimed primarily at those who have joined us at the national celebration of young people and fishing, we will round off our year of Let’s Fish! Commonwealth celebrations on Saturday 22 October with a gathering of around 160 participants on the Shropshire Union Canal.

We believe that teams are an important component in almost any sport. Consequently, we will be aiming to allocate each chosen participant a place in a fishing team of three members based on individual Commonwealth Community connections. Those who are invited to be part of this event will receive a formal invitation via email in late September 2022. Participants will need their own fishing equipment for this event.
