The charity making life better by water

Dudley tunnel and canal

Dudley

Dudley is an ideal place to begin exploring the canals, with not one but two canals to choose from - Dudley no 1 Canal and Dudley no 2 Canal.

Enjoy a canalside walk or relaxing boat trip, and admire the local history. See if you can spot any of the limestone fossils remaining from when the area was below sea, and explore some of the numerous local attractions, like the Dudley Tunnel, the only tunnel where boaters must still 'leg it' through because no engines are allowed - just don't be startled by the bats!

Things to see and do

Wildlife spotting

Bats are the big draw here. In the evening look out for Daubenton's and Pipistrelles especially around the tunnel entrance. Shoals of Chubb are also a common sight.
