The charity making life better by water

Volunteer lock keeper poses in front of a Canal & River Trust branded van

I joined the Trust over 10 years ago when the charity was founded. The vision was inspirational, it really appealed to me.

I had been working for a large multinational in the data and information field and took early retirement.

After working behind a desk for decades, I was driven to do something physical…to be out and about.

I don't believe in gym subscriptions! The canal was the ideal thing.

I became a volunteer lock keeper at Bingley 5 Rise Locks under the concise tuition of Barry Whitelock (MBE) and a lead volunteer for the Leeds & Liverpool Canal working party.

As a lock keeper, I really enjoy the walk and talk with visitors and explaining the history and how things work.

And with the working party, I greatly enjoy organising the tasks and take great satisfaction in seeing a job right through to the final fix.

I am proud and pleased to be working within the Yorkshire & NE region.
