The charity making life better by water

Wigan Water Safety Partnership

Helping make Wigan's waterways a safer place.

The Wigan Water Safety Partnership was formed in 2020 and is made up of representatives from Canal & River Trust, Wigan Council, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue, Greater Manchester Police and Lancashire Wildlife Trust. We work together to help make Wigan's waterways safer.

The Partnership works hard to push out vital water safety messages and campaigns throughout the year and to help educate the local community. Working together we also deliver targeted water safety messages through our youth engagement and skills & learning teams.

During April 2021 to September 2022, we delivered water safety messages to over 788 primary school children from eight schools across the Wigan area. From September 2022 the Partnership has plans to contact every primary school in Wigan offering a 30-minute water safety assembly, The Trust also have a youth engagement water safety pack which we intend to make available to all colleges across the Wigan area.

Following a number of incidents, The Partnership recently commissioned RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) to undertake a full and independent safety review of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in central Wigan.
