Participating in Canalathon as a team

In 2023, a major financial services firm with a presence in Birmingham took part in Canalathon as a team. Read their story, get inspired, and find out how to participate in Canalathon as a team.

Why participate in Canalathon?

“Birmingham is home of one of the world’s most intricate canal networks. The Canal & River Trust’s goal of protecting and preserving our canals resonated with many of our employees who took up the challenge and had loads of fun along the way.

We walk and run past the canals every day and enjoy its beauty. Doing our bit to preserve and protect just feels right.”

How did you take part?

“Before Canalathon, a group of employees came together to form a running club. Members of the club did regular evening runs along the canals and found it refreshing to socialise outside the office in the beautiful summer weather.

When Canalathon launched, members of the club reached out to colleagues across the office to explain what Canalathon is and how they can participate and/or support. They set up a crowdfunding site for friends and families to contribute, ran a raffle at the office, and used their network to amplify the message and hit the goal. They also gamified their walks and runs by creating a group on a tracking app.”

Any advice for teams fundraising for Canalathon 2024?

“Do your research and plan ahead.

First, set an ambitious, yet realistic, target. Find out whether there is a gift matching program that can amplify contributions. Set up your JustGiving page and a fitness tracking app that works for everyone.

Now you are all set to spread the message far and wide – use any and all forums available. Getting a couple of high-profile people will give you access to office-wide forums to spread the message.

Ensure you are visible (flyers, posters, and a physical desk at a high footfall area) and make it easy to contribute. Last, but not least, having fun is really important, so keep any office event light. Think bake sale or raffle.”

What was the best part about participating in Canalathon as a team?

“Getting to know colleagues we wouldn’t have otherwise known. It really brings people together.”
