We're the charity for your canals

Sawbridgeworth winter works

Starting on 19 October 2026, our teams will undertake essential repairs to Lock 5 on the River Stort in Sawbridgeworth.

In order to extend its lifespan, we'll be refurbishing the lock’s bottom gate.

We’ll be doing everything we can to minimise disruptions, but it might mean that things can move a little slower than usual on the towpath, and the water.

We hope this work will be complete by 23 December 2026 and appreciate you bearing with us during this time.

Help support our work

As a charity, it costs us millions of pounds every year to deliver our winter works programme.

Connecting many of the UK's urban and rural areas, canals and rivers provide essential spaces for wildlife and people, helping us all feel happier and healthier.

But these 250-year-old waterways and their vital ecosystems are threatened by the growing impact of climate change and more extreme weather. Without constant upkeep and investment, they face decline and closure, and we risk losing the incredible benefits they bring.

Lend a hand

Canals need many hands to look after them. By volunteering with us, you can really make a difference. We offer a variety of roles for our volunteers, whether you can spare a few minutes or a few days.

Every contribution counts, and you can truly make a meaningful impact in your community.
