Update 24 September 2026, 4:02pm
Since our last update, the designs for the new beam and post on the offside of Lock 58 have been approved. A method of repair has now been agreed, and our team are working with local contractors to schedule a date for the works to commence.
While we wait for a date for the works to begin, the towpath side remains navigable.
Our next update will be provided on or before Wednesday, 7 October.
Update 10 September 2026, 10:56am
Following our initial assessment, our team has carried out a further inspection of the lock beam at Lock 58 offside.
During this inspection, rot has been identified within the supporting post as well as the lock beam. As a result, a new beam and post will be designed and will need to be prepared and submitted for approval before a new method of repair can be planned for the new beam and post to be replaced.
However, the towpath side of the lock remains navigable.

Navigation is currently restricted at Lock 58 on the Trent & Mersey Canal on the offside due to a rotten beam, which is making the offside lock inoperable.
Our team has attended site to assess the damage and are now planning a method of repair, to enable the lock to be safety operated.
The towpath side of the lock remains available for use.
