Closed - Lock 41, Bank Newton Top Lock to Lock 2 Office Lock | Canal & River Trust

Whilst water levels have recovered in this area to open navigation now would jeopardise our efforts to recover levels further up the canal. Navigation will therefore remain closed until Monday 17th August 2026 when the position will be re-evaluated.   In recognition that there are boaters in this area that may wish to exit the Leeds-Liverpool Canal we will be providing downward passage through Spring Garden, Oddy, St Ann Ing, and Office Locks on Friday 14th August 2026 between 10am and 1pm. There is no need to book as locks will be open with roving lock keeper assistance as needed.     We will provide a further update no later than 4pm on Monday 17th August 2026.

Water levels through Gargrave and Bank Newton up to Lock 41 continue to struggle with limited inflows being received to aid recovery.   We are therefore unable to re-open passage at this time.   Navigation will therefore remain closed until Monday 17th August 2026 when the position will be re-evaluated.   We will provide a further update no later than 4pm on Monday 17th August 2026.

Water levels continue to struggle between Newlay and Kirkstall and all locks within the affected area will remain closed towards office lock. This will be re-evaluated on Wednesday 12th August 2026, with a further update provided by 4pm on this day.   Once levels have recovered sufficiently for navigation to re-open, we will be revising our operating schedule for these locks to preserve water and extend navigation as long as possible. We are currently working through scenarios of what this looks like and will advise in due course.

Low Water Levels

Due to the continued dry weather, we are experiencing low water levels on this section of the canal.

Our teams are monitoring the situation closely and taking steps to manage available water resources where possible.

We will reassess water levels on Monday 10 August, and this notice will be reviewed and updated by 12:00 noon.
