Lock 6, Brearley-16 Rochdale Canal - REOPENED

We have been closely monitoring the water levels and there is enough for passage so we are reopening this section from Lock 16 to Lock 6. Below Lock 12 down to Lock 6, it is navigable but may be a little lower than usual, however we have boats travelling downstream which will help this section as the crafts will be moving water down with them. We are also aware that we have a blockage at the bywash at Lock 13, though we have water coming in, it is not at its full capacity, but we hope to have this resolved early next week. We ask boaters to share locks where possible and help to conserve water where it can.

Please do not attempt to travel up and down the flight as this is making it worse for boaters that are in these pounds.

Our Operations team was on site at Lock 13 yesterday and has effected a successful repair to the damaged paddle.

Water levels in the area are still recovering, however and the team will continue to monitor this. The closure will remain in place to allow this to happen for the next two days. Once levels have equalised, this notice will be updated.

Water levels in the area will take time to recover and the team will continue to monitor them overnight and into tomorrow morning. We will update this notice once they have returned to normal and we are able to reopen this stretch of the canal.

Water levels in the area between Locks 9 and 16 continue to be too low to be navigated safely.

We will continue to monitor the levels and will update this notice on Wednesday, 22nd July, giving the pounds more time to recover.

If you see that water levels are looking unusually low, please let us know . Our teams actively manage water levels and can carefully refill low pounds, checking for problems and making sure moored boats on adjacent pounds stay safe.  

As a result of vandalism, the water levels around lock 14 Rochdale Canal, are too low to navigate.

To allow this pound to recover, we are having to put a closure on the locks between 9 and 16.
