Hurleston Flight

Repairs are on track to be completed by 4:00pm today, Friday 31 July 2026. Following completion of the works, we will need to allow at least 24 hours for the locks and canal pounds to replenish.   As a result, navigation between Lock 1 and Lock 4 on the Hurleston Flight of the Llangollen Canal will remain closed until 10:00am on Sunday 2 August 2026.   From Sunday 2 August, a passage through the locks will be available daily between 10:00am and 4:00pm, with the last passage at 3:00pm.   We will continue to monitor water levels and assess the effectiveness of the repairs. The passage arrangement will be kept under review and may remain in place for the foreseeable future to help conserve water during the current dry weather conditions."

Works at Lock 1 are nearing completion, which include repairs to the ground paddles and the tail gate. Further checks will also be undertaken on leakage through the head gate.

Repairs at Lock 2 are ongoing and include work to both the head gate and tail gate.

Once Locks 1 and 2 are complete, both teams will move to Lock 3 and work jointly to carry out the required repairs, with completion planned by 4:00pm on Friday 31 July 2026 at the latest.

Unfortunately, the scaffolding at Lock 1 cannot be removed until Monday 27 July, which means reopening the canal over the weekend is not possible. However, this additional time will allow the concrete repairs at Lock 2, including repairs to the lock floor, head gate cill and offside brickwork, to cure fully before navigation is restored.

Inspections carried out last week identified that the locks at Hurleston require essential repairs to prevent significant water loss through the flight. Following these inspections, a method of repair has been developed to address issues identified at Locks 1, 2 and 3 and enable the navigation to reopen safely.

To complete the repairs as quickly as possible, multiple teams have been mobilised to site and are working concurrently across the locks. Our teams are undertaking a programme of works that includes repairs to ground paddles, lock gate liners, lock gates and cills.

The current stoppage will remain in place until works have completed, and we are aiming to reopen the locks by 4:00pm on Friday 31 July, subject to the successful completion of the works.

We appreciate the impact this closure may have on customers and thank you for your patience while these essential works are carried out to protect the canal's water resources and ensure the safe operation of the flight.

While managing water levels, we have identified that repairs are required to the lock gates at Locks 1, 2 and 3. The works will include repairs to the lock gate liners and cills.

Our engineering team is currently assessing and planning the most appropriate method of carrying out these repairs. We are doing everything we can to expedite the repairs by bringing in other teams to support with the repairs.

Navigation between Lock 1 and Lock 4 on the Hurleston Flight of the Llangollen Canal will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday 14 July from 12noon due to low water levels from the continued dry weather we have recently been experiencing.

To protect the long-term sustainability of the canal network and continue supporting boaters across the waterway, it is essential that stop planks are installed at this location to help conserve water and manage levels effectively.

The closure will remain in place while water levels recover. As soon as conditions have improved sufficiently to allow safe navigation, the closure will be lifted and the route reopened.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide a further update on or before Friday, 17 July. 

Navigation between Lock 1 and Lock 4 on the Hurleston Flight of the Llangollen Canal will be closed from 3:00pm today. Further closures will be in place from Saturday, 11 July until 9:30am on Sunday, 12 July, with an additional closure commencing at 3:00pm.

These temporary closures are necessary due to low water levels. During the closure periods, the local team will be working to replenish water resources and maintain safe navigation conditions throughout the flight.

Customers planning to travel through the flight before the closures are asked to operate the locks with care and help conserve water wherever possible.
