Update 24 July 2026, 2:18pm
Our teams are continuing to undertake repairs to restore the affected area. Since the last update, the team have filled in the voids beneath the towpath with clay pellets and resurfaced with a tarmac and chipping finish. Ground guard mats will also be installed to provide additional protection to the towpath surface.
These works are necessary to ensure the long-term stability and safety of the towpath before it can be reopened to the public.
A further update will be provided on or before Friday 31 July.
Update 10 July 2026, 2:18pm
The towpath at Lune Aqueduct on the Lancaster Canal remains closed due to a sinkhole that has developed along the towpath.
Further investigations have identified a number of voids beneath the towpath. Remedial works are therefore required, including clay infill works, reprofiling and levelling of the surface.
A further update will be provided on or before Friday 24 July.
Update 10 June 2026, 2:30pm
The towpath at Lune Aqueduct on the Lancaster Canal remains closed due to a sinkhole that has developed along the towpath.
A ground survey of the structure has been undertaken to determine the underlying cause. Our engineers are currently awaiting the results, which will determine a full design solution and an appropriate method of repair.
A further update will be provided on or before Friday 10 July.
Update 1 June 2026, 4:02pm
The towpath at Lune Aqueduct on the Lancaster Canal remains closed due to a sinkhole that has developed along the towpath.
Our engineers are continuing to work on a method of repair while also investigating the underlying cause. Due to the presence of electricity cables in the area, a full design solution is required before repair works can proceed.
A further update will be provided on or before Wednesday, 10 June.

The towpath is closed at Lune Aqueduct on the Lancaster Canal due to a sinkhole which has appeared along the towpath.
Our local team and engineers are currently on site assessing and planning a method of repair.
