Update 17 August 2026, 2:02pm
Although the planned HS2 works affecting the Saltley Flight have now been completed, the flight will remain closed to navigation until further notice to help protect water resources and maintain water levels across the wider network during the current period of dry weather.
Keeping the flight closed will help us manage available water supplies more effectively and support navigation on other parts of the network while current conditions persist. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and review the closure regularly.
Boaters are advised that an alternative route remains available via the Aston Flight, allowing access between the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal and the wider Birmingham Canal Navigations network.
We appreciate boaters' patience and cooperation during this period. Before travelling, please check for the latest information on our website and plan your journey accordingly.
Original 26 March 2026, 2:14pm
A navigation and towpath closure are required for works by High Speed 2 (HS2) to demolish the Saltley Viaduct — a large public road bridge that crosses the Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal. Please note an alternative route is available via the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal using Aston Locks whilst these works are taking place.
The towpath will be closed between Railway Bridge 108C and Bridge 107. Please follow the signage that will be in place.
We appreciate your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience caused while these essential works are carried out.
