Descriptions
Update 15 April 2026, 1:52pm
We're pleased to advise that the navigation and towpath are open again.
Contractors have removed the contaminated pipework and the pollution has naturally biodegraded. The only remaining active pollution is limited to an area where residual material is leaching through the waterway wall, which has been fully contained by bunding.
We kindly ask all users to follow the signage in place at the site. In particular:
- Boaters must pass the site at tickover speed only.
- Boats should pass as close to the offside as possible to minimise bow waves and prevent the bunds from being pulled away from the waterway wall.
Update 23 March 2026, 11:17am
Navigation and the towpath remains closed until further notice while we work to contain the pollution incident. Contractors are expected to begin work this week to excavate the affected towpath.
We will continue to provide updates as work progresses.
Update 2 March 2026, 1:35pm
Please be advised that navigation remains closed in the affected section. It is essential that boats do not pass through the area to prevent further environmental impact.

Between Catshill Junction and Rushall Lock 1 | Canal & River Trust
Original 9 February 2026, 2:48pm
We have been alerted to a pollution incident affecting the canal between Aldridge Marina and Aldridge Wharf Bridge, Walsall.
As a result, navigation has been temporarily closed in this section. Spill pads and containment booms are currently in place, and it is essential that boats do not pass through the area, as movement would risk dispersing the pollution further.
We are actively monitoring the situation and will provide an update as soon as it is safe to reopen navigation.
