We apologise for the need to schedule an in-season stoppage on the Kennet & Avon Canal.
Essential gate replacements will be carried out at Lock 3 (Swineford) and Lock 5 (near Saltford).
To complete these works, a stoppage will be in place from 17 March to 30 April 2026.
Navigation Details:
- 17 March: A restriction will be in place while the site is set up.
- 18 March – 29 April: Full navigation closure.
- 30 April: A restriction will be in place during site demobilisation.
During restricted periods, boats may be held temporarily while the site is made safe for passage. Works to be carried out:
- Lock 3: Bottom gate replacement
- Lock 5: Top and bottom gate replacement
Both locks have sustained significant damage and currently require assistance to operate. Lock 5 also suffered severe fire damage at the end of the 2025 season, leaving no viable repair options.
The gates have deteriorated beyond repair and must be replaced promptly to ensure safe and reliable navigation. Due to a six-week lead time for timber and gate manufacturing, the earliest completion date for the new gates is mid-March.
Works are scheduled to begin immediately after, when river levels and flow are expected to be favourable for safe and timely completion.
We appreciate your understanding while these essential works take place and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
