Update 27 August 2025, 11:11am
Further to the notice below, our engineers have been to site and inspected the lock.
The bottom lock gates have suffered significant fire damage, particularly the towpath side gate.
There is substantial loss of timber on the mitre post, the vertical structural part at the edge of each gate, as well as fire damage to other parts of the gate. Unfortunately, the vessel has sunk in the lock, and the contents of the lock present a pollution risk to the river.
All the pollution is currently contained within the lock, and a boom has been setup downstream. We are working closely with recovery teams to remove the vessel and pollution first, before mobilisation starts on the repair work.
It is difficult to put a timescale on this as this is complex task, however we are doing all we can move forward on reopening.
