Families looking for a new outdoor adventure this Easter and beyond are being invited to try fishing at a series of friendly, beginner sessions taking place on local canals.
A simple way to get close to nature
Thanks to the support of local angling clubs and funding raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery, participants receive one-to-one tuition from qualified coaches, making it easy for complete beginners to give fishing a go.
Suitable for anyone aged six and over, the sessions are perfect for families, friends and young people looking for a new activity outdoors. Whether it’s the first time holding a rod or a chance to rediscover a childhood hobby, the programme offers a simple way to enjoy nature close to home.
After trying a session, young anglers can sign up to the Let’s Fish! Fishing & Environment Awards Programme, a new programme designed to help them develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in fishing.
Those who catch the fishing bug are invited to take part in Regional Celebration events later in the summer where participants can put their new skills to the test alongside other young anglers. The programme culminates in two major national events in the autumn: the National Celebration of Young People and Fishing, the UK’s largest gathering of young anglers; and the Daiwa Global Communities Celebration.
A fantastic way to switch off
John Ellis, our national fisheries & angling manager, said: “Fishing is a fantastic way for people to switch off, enjoy nature and spend time together outdoors. The canals our charity cares for run right through the heart of towns and cities, making them perfect places for families and young people to try fishing close to home.
“Let’s Fish! events are friendly, welcoming and designed for beginners, with all the equipment provided and expert coaches on hand to help. Over the years we’ve introduced thousands of young people to fishing, and it’s wonderful to see so many of them develop a lifelong love of the sport.”
Laura Chow, head of charities at People's Postcode Lottery, said: “It's amazing that funding raised by players supports the Canal & River Trust to deliver the Let’s Fish! programme. Its beginner-friendly sessions are the perfect way for everyone to enjoy the outdoors while developing a new skill with family and friends, no matter their age. This not only encourages more people to discover the joy of fishing but also learn more about our beautiful canals and the species that call them home.”
Sessions range from free to £5 plus booking fee, with everything included for the day – rods, bait, licences and expert guidance. Places must be booked in advance to manage numbers on site.
The National Celebration of Young People and Fishing will take place on 12–13 September, and the Daiwa Global Communities Celebration on 17 October. Tickets for the National Celebration are £12.
