Activities in Nottingham

We are teaming up with Binks Yard to celebrate Nottingham’s heritage with a Black History Month event by the city’s canal on Sunday 8 October 2023.

During the event there will be a chance for people to get a ducks’-eye view of the city from Canadian canoes. There will be a narrowboat trip specifically for members of the Windrush generation, as well as public trips onboard one of Megan & Tinks’ narrowboats later in the day. People will also be able to join a heritage walk lead by Panya Banjoko from the Black Archives. The walk will meet at Market Square and wind its way to Binks Yard, taking in some of the city’s notable historic sites.

On stage there will be live sets from DJ Aich, music from acts including Marcus Joseph, Davina Songbird and Hope Community Gospel Choir as well as a performance by spoken word artist Cara Thompson. For those feeling energetic CazzybeeFit will lead a Reggaerobics session live on stage.

The event will also host a History Zone, run by the Black Archives, as well as Canal & River Trust stalls focussed on water safety and volunteering.

Black History Month event at Nottingham

A different persepctive of the city and its history

Carol Burrell, our community wellbeing coordinator, said: "We can’t wait to celebrate Black History Month by the canal and bring the community together to get a different perspective on the city and its history.

"Research shows that time spent by water is good for our physical and mental health, so whether you’re paddling a canoe, taking part in a reggaerobics session or just taking in some live music by the waterside this event will have something for everyone.

"We’re really looking forward to bringing the people of Nottingham together to enjoy some time by water."

Ben Hicklin, Head of Events at Binks Yard, said: "Binks Yard are delighted to be teaming up with the Canal & River Trust to celebrate Black History Month. Building on the success of last year, we know this will be a fantastic family day out full of music, poetry and discovery. We look forward to welcoming you to Binks Yard."
