The bridge, which crosses the River Weaver near Frodsham, is undergoing vital works to replace and repair existing mechanical and electrical elements to ensure the almost 100-year-old structure is safe and fit for purpose.
Vital maintenance and repairs
Specialist engineers working on behalf of us are about to start work replacing the barriers and installing new signalling and navigation lights. These works will require an overnight lane restriction with one lane remaining open, controlled by three-way temporary traffic lights.
The overnight lane restrictions will be in place from:
- Monday 27 to Friday 31 October 2025, from 7pm to 6.30am
- Monday 10 to Friday 14 November 2025, from 7pm to 6.30am
A spokesperson explains: “We’re pleased that these vital maintenance and repair works, which are a priority to protect the long-term operation of the bridge, are progressing well and are on schedule. We’ve reached a key stage in the programme, to replace the barriers and warning lights, that will help ensure the bridge is more reliable and resilient for many years to come.”
Keeping impact to a minimum
Working closely with the local council and its contractors, the Canal & River Trust has succeeded in shortening the planned project to significantly reduce any impact on residents.
The final phase of the works will require a full road closure, which will take place during the school half-term (16 – 20 February 2026) to help minimise disruption. We will provide a shuttle bus for pedestrians and cyclists during the February closure. Further details will be confirmed nearer the time.
Our spokesperson added: “We appreciate the local community’s patience and understanding whilst we carry out these vital works, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. Our teams are making every effort to keep any impact to a minimum and are working extremely hard to complete the project as quickly as possible.”
The iconic metal swing bridge, which opened in 1926 and celebrates its centenary next year, carries the busy A56 road over the River Weaver Navigation, close to junction 12 of the M56 motorway in North Cheshire.
