The last weekend of January saw the UK battered by Storm Éowyn, the fifth named storm of the season and the ‘strongest in 10 years’, according to the Met Office.
The impact of Storm Éowyn on our canals
As Éowyn hit, our network faced winds of up to 75mph and torrential rain. With severe yellow and amber warnings issued, Storm Éowyn felled trees, hedges and vegetation across our canals and threatened the wildlife that calls our network home.
The worst of Storm Éowyn fell upon our West Midlands region, with falling trees damaging cars at Solihull on the Grand Union Canal and blocking navigation on the Llangollen Canal.
Fallen tree blocks the Llangollen Canal after Storm Éowyn.
Our teams have been working hard to remove fallen trees and make our network safe for everyone to enjoy.
Hot on the heels of Storms Darragh and Bert, we really need your support to protect our canals from the impacts of increasingly damaging and extreme weather events.
