Regional Round Up North – July 2023
Our popular Regional Round Up is back, with a twist. This time, with the sun shining and our banks in bloom, we’d like to tell you about some exciting events coming to a canalside near you this summer. We’ve got waterfront festivals, historic boat rallies and a number of exciting volunteering opportunities. Everything you need to make it a summer to remember.
Step back in time with us this month at Audlem Wharf in Cheshire, as we host a unique gathering of historic working narrowboats. Built between 1890 and 1960, these marvellous little boats were once the lifeblood of our economy. With more than 30 of them on show, it's the perfect day out for boat enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
This summer, we're asking green-fingered residents in Burnley to help us encourage local plants and wildlife. Join us for a spot of planting and weeding at Finsley Gate Wharf and give nature a helping hand. Everyone's welcome, and it's a great way to get active, make friends and do your bit for the environment.
As ever, our passionate colleagues and volunteers are marching at Manchester Pride in August. With tens of thousands of people taking part, the city will be alive with music, joy and colour. Come and cheer us on as we strive to create a welcoming, inclusive environment along our waterways.
Ever wondered what lies beneath the calm waters of our canals? Pop down to Liverpool's historic South Docks this August for a rare glimpse into the icy depths. Our team of marine experts will guide you through a hidden world, using cutting-edge technology to reveal an incredible underwater ecosystem, teeming with life.
Yorkshire & North East
Leeds Waterfront Festival kicks off at the city's Granary Wharf this month. The summer-long celebration is jam-packed with fun-filled events and activities for all ages, with an eclectic mix of music, performances, arts and workshops. Entry is free and everybody's welcome. What better way to kickstart your summer?
Ever thought about volunteering for the Trust? It's a great way to get active, meet people and learn new skills. This summer, we're hosting a number of welcome sessions at The Moorings pub in Sowerby Bridge. Pop along and we'll tell you all you need to know about becoming a volunteer for our wonderful charity.
August sees the return of the lung-busting 'Trans-Pennine Run', a 130-mile race along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Passing through the region's industrial heartland, this gruelling event is one of Britain's longest non-stop, point-to-point running races. Pop down to your local canal to see the competitors in action.
East Midlands
Ever considered trying your hand at fishing? This summer, we'll be hosting more of our award-winning 'Let's Fish!' events thanks to the support of our valued partners. With events in Milton Keynes and Reading, we'll have you hooking a fish in no time.
If you're looking for some family fun in the school holidays, come along to our Community Fun Day at Foxton Locks next month. Have a go at a variety of activities including canoeing, crafts, trails and bug hunts – all in the beautiful surroundings of Britain's longest and steepest staircase flight of locks.
The UK's most thrilling team paddle challenge, the TRENT100, returns later this month. And it's no joke. Over the course of two days, competitors will brave 100 kilometres of fast water, travelling across three different counties on Britain's longest team endurance challenge. Get yourself down to Trent Bridge in Nottingham to cheer them home.
Make the most of your summer
