Route instructions

  • From the carpark, follow the upward path of the canal as it travels through the lock flight. Your first stop is at the side pond of lock 40.
  • Stop two is further along the flight by lock 42. You'll pass an information board and some benches where you can sit and watch the boats.
  • Stop three is by lock 43. Sit and relax for a while, or explore the footbridge over the canal.
  • Your final stop is the Caen Hill cafe, a former lock keeper's cottage.

The full Caen Hill lock flight has 29 locks across 2 miles (3.2km). These locks have a total rise of 237ft (72m) or a 1 in 44 gradient.

The 16 locks that form the steepest part of the flight at Caen Hill is a scheduled ancient monument and the longest continuous flight of locks in the country.
