5km Step by Step walk at Pontymoile Basin, Mon & Brec

Starting from Pontymoile Basin, this linear walk to Five Locks Basin is just under 5km or 3 miles.

This Step by Step route is a series of short stages, with breaks at points of interest. There's plenty to see without walking the whole route. Why not start with a short walk and come back again to explore further?

Start point: Pontymoile Basin, NP4 0RF

End point: The Cascades, NP44 (approx)

Distance: 4.8km / 3 miles

The route

1. Start at Pontymoile Basin.
2. Walk along the towpath, first point of reference is the railway bridge, and a little further on Junction of NCN routes Route 49. Keep an eye out for mile markers along this stretch.
3. At stage 3 you'll get to Panteg Bridge, 49. You're 1.2km in.
4. Look out for Open Hearth Pub, originally called the Railway Inn back in the 1800s.
5. Keeping walking, coming up is the Crown Bridge, 48 and Solomon's Bridge, 47, displaying lovely stone arches that can be seen all along this stretch of canal.
6. Cwmbran Tunnel. 87 yards in length and includes a steep incline.
7. Five Locks Flight marks 4km. This flight is make up of locks 59 to 63 and is awaiting restoration.
8. At the end of your walk, you'll reach The Cascades, constructed in 1960s. A great time to spin round and walk back to the start.

  2. Gan gerdded ar hyd y llwybr tynnu, y cyfeirbwynt cyntaf yw'r bont reilffordd, ac ychydig ymhellach ar Gyffordd 49 y Rhwydwaith Seiclo Cenedlaethol. Cadwch lygad am farcwyr milltiroedd ar y rhan hon.
  3. Pont Panteg, 49.
  4. Cadwch lygad am dafarn yr Open Hearth, neu'r Railway Inn fel y gelwid hi'n wreiddiol yn y 1800au.
  5. Daliwch ati i gerdded a bydd Pont y Crown, 48, a Phont Solomon, 47, o'ch blaenau gyda'u bwâu carreg hyfryd sydd i'w gweld ar hyd y rhan hon o'r gamlas.
  6. Twnnel Cwmbrân. Mae'n 87 llath o hyd ac yn cynnwys llethr serth.
  7. Pum Loc.
  8. Rhaeadrau, a godwyd yn y 1960au, yw pen y daith.
