Tales of a pike angler at the 2021 Division Two National

As a member of the Canal & River Trust fisheries and angling team I was well aware of the Division 2 National Championships. I am by no stretch of the imagination a canal match angler, in fact the last time I competed in a match of any sort was on the River Trent around 35 years ago! Back then I fished with rod and reel in the traditional Nottingham style and it is only very recently that I picked up a pole for the first time.

The Wellingborough & District Nene 2021 coaching season

My name is Pat Byrne and I am lead level 2 coach the Wellingborough & District Nene angling club. We are one of the oldest clubs in the land, having been formed in 1868. Together with coach Bryan Dray, known by some as the ‘hairy bikers’, we run the angling development team comprising of six qualified licensed coaches. Back in December 2020, the club’s work around health and wellbeing was recognised when we won the Angling Times prestigious club of the year award.

Adam Dowd - My life and times in fishing

Adam was recently appointed as the Fisheries & Angling Technical Specialist North and joins the Fisheries & Angling Team at the end of October 2020. As well as a degree in a relevant discipline and subsequent Institute of Fisheries Management qualifications, Adam is a qualified angling coach and has been a keen angler for most of his life. This is Adam’s story of his life in fishing.

Kayleigh Smith - My fishing journey

I started fishing back when I was around ten years old, which looking back was a good age to start although seven or eight might have been even better. I became interested in having a go when I used to walk my pet dog every day around a quarry pond, where I would speak to some of the guys who were fishing. From then on, I wanted to have a proper go at fishing myself.

Looking back at the 2021 Division One National Championships

Arriving back at the Towcester racecourse headquarters, the satisfied look on the exhausted face of local organiser Chris Howard summed it up. The worst of the doomsters had thankfully got it wrong. The day had run pretty smoothly and fishing wise, the recovering Grand Union Canal venue had performed pretty much to its maximum potential given the reality of the fish stock situation.
