The charity making life better by water

Woolsthorpe Locks

The Grantham Canal was built between 1793 and 1798 to link the River Trent to Grantham. A successful canal, narrowboats and barges transported coal, building materials and groceries to Grantham and made the return journey with agricultural produce and wool.

One of the walking trails take you past Belvoir Castle. In 1793, the Duke of Rutland built a private tramway between the wharf at Muston Gorse and Belvoir Castle.

Today the group of three locks at Woolsthorpe Locks are just part of the canal carefully being restored to full navigation.
