The charity making life better by water

Autumnal canal scene, orange leaves on towpath, blue skies

Saltaire

Saltaire is a remarkable Victorian model village, built between 1851 and 1871 by wool baron Sir Titus Salt to house his textile workers, and achieved World Heritage status in 2001.

A 10-minute stroll along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal from the village will take you to Hirst Wood Lock and the seven-arch aqueduct over the River Aire.

The Saltaire World Heritage Village has plenty to explore, including Salts Mill – housing Europe's largest collection of works by Bradford-born artist David Hockney). Take a walk over the River Aire to Roberts Park, catch a ride on the oldest working cable tramway, or cycle along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
