Brentford Gauging Lock was once one of the busiest places on the Grand Union Canal / River Brent. Today, Brentford Lock is a great place for a walk and cycle.
Just a 10 minute jaunt around the towpath is the Thames Lock the final lock on the Grand Union Canal and the gateway to the River Thames. Or if your prefer the 15 minute walk the other way, you'll find Syon House and Park.
Where does the water come from?
Some of te water at Brenftford comes down the Grand Union Canal from rivers further north, but most is provided by the River Brent which joins the canal just below lock 97 on the Hanwell Flight. Bewtween Lock 97 and the tidal River Thames at Brentford the River Brent is canalised with locks linking navigable sections and side loops representing the original cource of the river. The ridal range of the River Thames can be as much as 7 metres at spring tide.
