Boating holidays in winter

If you're considering hiring a narrowboat in winter, here are some of the things you need to think about.

Can I take a boating holiday in winter?

Yes, narrowboats can be hired all year round, although it's best to check with your chosen company for any dates they may be closed. Some may continue to run over Christmas, others may not.

There are a few useful websites that list out UK boat hire firms, or you can have a quick google - just make sure you check the reviews.

What are the benefits of a winter boating holiday?

Less waterway traffic

The warmer months are prime time for boat hire and the water can get busy - particularly in tourist hotspots. By going out of season you're more likely to have stretches of canal all to yourself.

This also means that you may have the pick of the bunch when it comes to mooring spots. Convenient short stay moorings located close to sites of interest, or canalside pubs, will be a lot easier to nab.

Prices may be lower

The cost of hiring a boat is likely to be lower in winter, but bear in mind that there may be an increase if you're choosing to cruise over Christmas or New Year.

Discover winter wildlife

You'll likely be treated to some beautiful crisp mornings, and let's not forget about the array of winter wildlife that makes itself known. Sparse hedgerows mean you may be able to catch a glimpse of some species that remain well hidden in the summer.

What should I consider about boating in winter?

Check your route

We run a winter works programme to undertake necessary maintenance outside of peak season. Our website is always up to date with any restrictions or closures, so check before you travel.

Be alert to weather warnings

Whilst a calm winter's day can make for idyllic travel, there's always the risk of more challenging weathers, including frost, ice, fog, winds, high water levels and potential flooding. Familiarise yourself with the forecast, as well as what your hire boat has in terms of supplies (e.g fuel, logs, blankets etc). You may need to stock up on some additional bits and pieces.

Our water level and strong stream warnings page contains automated, near real-time data from a number of waterways.

The days are shorter

It's also worth remembering that daylight hours are much more limited in winter, so your cruising window is reduced. Most hire boat companies will have rules and regulations about boating in the dark, so make sure you check all your paperwork.
