Decorating your boat for the festive season

As the nights draw in, towpaths across our canal and river network start to become illuminated with festive décor.

From fairy lights to winter garlands, canal boat owners have to get extra-creative if they wish to decorate their liveaboard with Christmas cheer - space inside is a premium, after all.

If you're at a bit of a loss as to how to spruce up your small space for the holiday season, these suggestions may help.

Mini Christmas Trees

6ft Northern Spruces aren't likely to be bought by boaters!

Mini trees atop gas lockers, cratches and tug decks can add festive charm to the outside of your vessel, or, if you'd prefer to enjoy the fresh scent of pine from inside, something miniature shouldn't steal too much precious space.

Tiny treasures

Cute cross stitch and felt creations, or tiny tree decorations hanging from beams can create a very wholesome and festive feel.

After the holidays are over these items are small enough to be tucked away in a sock drawer until the following year, which is an added bonus.

Glorious garlands and reams of ribbon

Long lines of ribbon from the galley bulkhead to the bow doors are a great way to hang Christmas cards, rather than find surfaces to stand them all upon.

If you fancy adding a garland to the cabin area, traditional holly, ivy and mistletoe may not last particularly well due to the heat from the solid fuel stove. You could try making garlands by stringing up things like dried fruit and cranberries, which offer a festive look and are easy to recycle.

Exterior décor

Be it a boat or a land house, who can resist jazzing up the outside of their property at Christmas time.

Sustainable willow and foraged foliage swags certainly don't look out of place draped across the exterior.

You could also invest in some cheap and cheerful LED fairy lights that won't eat too much power - and serve as a visual treat for those who find themselves on the towpath.
